This black-crowned night-heron is almost adult. Its colours are changing from juvenile to adult. Photographed in India Shores, Florida (US). Juveniles are brown and streaky overall. Note pale yellowish bill. Adults have a black cap and back that contrasts with its whitish to pale gray belly and gray wings.
